Suggestions for carving implements

Can anyone suggest good tools for carving rubber stamps? I'm a bit
apprehensive about attacking one with an Xacto knife.

Thanks,
Bruce

Linoleum cutters are good for carving - good for gouging, but I think you can
get much better detail with an xacto knife. You can buy the former at any
artist/craft supply shop including Ben Franklin, Michael's and AC Moore.

Hi Bruce,
I use a linoleum cutter, #1 blade for all the detail and a #5 blade to clear
out big areas. If you can look at the blades carefully and try to make sure
that they don't have any nickes or uneven edges. This will help to keep
your carving smooth. It also helps to have the material your carving up on
a small box so that you can get your wrist lower than the cutting surface.
This will give you more control and you can make long smooth cuts or gouges
depending on the technique you are trying to do.

I also put a piece of tracing paper (a little bigger than the piece I'm
carving) under the carving material which allows me to hold the blade still
and slide the material under the blade.

Hope this helps,
Wendy
